AIB in a Ground Breaking event, releases eight Final Reports in one fell swoop

Accident Investigation Bureau, Nigeria(AIB-N) today released eight final aircraft accident and serious incident reports to the public.

This is coming amidst the lingering paralysing effects of Covid-19 pandemic even as the Bureau restated its focus and commitment to its mandate.

Addressing journalists at AIB headquarters in Abuja during the presentation of the reports, the commissioner of the Bureau, Engr. Akin Olateru stated that the newly released reports makes a total of 67 accident reports released by the Bureau since its inception in 2007 of which a total of 48 of the reports were released under his stewardship.

The Bureau also issued a total of nine safety recommendations that can help in preventing similar accidents and serious incidents from reoccurring, which were addressed to Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the affected airlines and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) among others.

According to the Commissioner, the Bureau has now released a total of 220 safety recommendations since inception of the Bureau with 139 of the recommendations released under his watch.

Of the eight final reports, which covers the period between 2010 and 2019, one was classified as an accident, while the remaining seven are serious incidents.

Said Olateru: ‘The Bureau is very conscious of her critical role in assuring a robust aviation safety in the country and globally even as it has resolved to pursue this with all vigour. We have the men and the equipment backed with government support to ensure that AIB-N plays her role effectively and purposefully.

The commissioner commended ‘our diligent and resourceful air safety investigators for their sacrifices and focus in delivering on the mandate’ who worked through the pandemics to produce the reports.
